Answers to the most common questions about UV offset inks
How does UV offset ink differ from conventional offset ink?
Conventional offset ink dries through oxidative polymerization — a process that takes from several hours to a full day. UV ink cures instantly under an ultraviolet lamp right in the press. This allows varnishing, cutting, die-cutting, and shipping immediately after printing, without a waiting period. UV ink also provides higher abrasion resistance and adhesion on synthetic substrates.
What printing speed is possible with UV offset inks?
All UV offset ink series provide stable performance at speeds above 10,000 sheets per hour and over 250 m/min. The ink-water balance remains stable even during long print runs, and compatibility with all types of dampening systems — with alcohol and without — allows the inks to be used on any sheetfed offset equipment without additional setup.
What additives can be used with UV offset inks?
Three main additives are used with UV offset inks: a reactive diluent to reduce viscosity (up to 5%), an antitack paste to reduce tack (up to 3%), and a photoinitiator to increase reactivity when printing dark colors or at high speeds (up to 5%). For the food packaging series, a hardener at up to 4% is additionally recommended — it improves adhesion and the mechanical resistance of the print. All additives should be added gradually with thorough mixing, without exceeding recommended dosages.
Which series should be chosen for IML (in-mold labeling)?
The UV CMYK food packaging series is best suited for IML applications — it is specifically engineered for this use and provides the necessary adhesion, resistance to hot and cold stamping, and low migration. Using a hardener at up to 4% is recommended to increase mechanical resistance.
Do these inks comply with PPWR 2026 requirements?
Yes. All UV offset ink series meet current requirements for PFAS (≤25 ppb) and heavy metals (≤100 mg/kg) under the PPWR regulation (EU 2025/40), which takes effect on August 12, 2026. The food packaging series is additionally free of BPA, 369, 379, EDB, EHA, and PBZ.
Can UV inks be printed on tinplate?
Yes, but only the film and foil series has confirmed suitability for metal decorating on tinplate. Before starting production, an adhesion test must be carried out, as the result depends on the type of tinplate coating — white base coat or clear varnish.
