How do UV pantones differ from conventional offset pantones?
The main difference is the curing method. UV pantones cure instantly under an ultraviolet lamp right in the press, while conventional offset pantones dry through oxidative polymerization over several hours. UV pantones provide higher resistance to solvents, alkalis, and mechanical abrasion, as well as better adhesion on synthetic substrates — film, foil, OPP. For paper and cardboard without special requirements, either option can be used.
Which black should be chosen for mixing UV pantones?
For pantone mixing followed by UV varnishing or lamination, neutral black must be used — it is specifically designed for these applications. Process black is intended for process CMYK printing. Deep black is suitable only for solid areas and requires a compatibility check before lamination. Using process black for pantone mixing followed by varnishing may cause varnish adhesion problems.
Can standard UV pantones be used for food packaging?
The standard series can be used for food packaging provided the substrate has confirmed barrier properties and there is no set-off in the stack or roll. For primary food packaging, or where regulatory requirements for controlled migration apply, the low-migration food-grade series with appropriate documentation is recommended. Do UV pantones comply with PPWR 2026 requirements?
Yes. Both UV base pantone series meet the requirements of the PPWR regulation (EU 2025/40) regarding PFAS (≤25 ppb) and heavy metals (≤100 mg/kg), which takes effect on August 12, 2026. The food-grade series is additionally free of BPA, substances 369, 379, EDB, EHA, and PBZ. We provide a complete documentation package to confirm compliance.
